Visas in the UK

The four most common UK visas for working in the UK are the ancestry visa, tier 1 highly skilled migrant visa, tier 2 sponsored work visa and the tier 5 youth mobility visa (formerly the working holiday visa).

Ancestry Visa

The ancestry visa is available if your grandparents were born in the UK and is valid for 5 years.

Tier 1 (General) Highly Skilled Migrant Visa

The skilled migrant visa is based on a points system and available to skilled workers that achieve the required number of points. This visa has become very difficult to obtain since changes were made in 2011.

Tier 2 Sponsored Work Visa

Work permits available to those who have an UK employer willing to sponsor them. The employer must obtain the visa and is required to prove to the British Authorities that they cannot find a suitable employee from within the country (the Resident Labour Market Test).

Tier 5 Youth Mobility Visa

The youth mobility visa replaced the Working Holiday Visa in 2008. The visa is only available to residents of certain countries that are aged 18 - 30 (Yes, up until the day before you turn 31). The visa is valid for 2 years
