Pay rates for Teachers in the UK

Pay rates for teachers in the UK are dependent on your level of experience, qualifications and the role that you are working in. Geographic location of the school can also influence the rate of pay – jobs in and around London generally pay more than in other areas.

UK Supply Teaching Pay rates

Supply teaching can be either day to day work or fixed term blocks but both are paid on a daily rate. Generally you only get paid when you are working and pro-rata holiday pay is built into the daily rates. The ranges below should give you an indication of what to expect.

Secondary Maths, Science, ICT £120 - £160
Secondary Arts and Humanities £110 - £150
Primary £110 - £140
Nursery (early childhood) £90 - £130
Special Needs (qualified teacher) £120 - £160
Teacher Aide (Special needs) £70 - £100
Teacher Aide (mainstream) £60 - £90

Pay Rates for Permanent UK Teaching Positions

In a permanent position you will be on the payroll of the school and be paid a salary as well as holiday pay, sick pay and any other permanent benefits negotiated in your employment agreement.

  • M1 – M3 is for teachers with 1-3yrs experience.
  • M4-6 is for those with 4-6 years experience.
  • The salary point you start on can be negotiated at the time of job offer.
  • Very experienced teachers may undergo further assessment to qualify for the Upper Pay Scale.
  • There are additional allowances for those working in Special Needs and those taking on other Teaching and Learning Responsibilities.
