Investment Banking Anyone?
For newly-qualified accountants looking to work in one of the investment banks, this is a good time to be in London.
What is the market like at the moment?
Recent signs have been positive in the London investment banking market. Over the last few months, the economy has picked up and there has been a surge in the need for recently-qualified accountants. Last year, employers were less keen to recruit during the recession and candidates were less willing to relocate to the UK while fewer opportunities were available. This has left a considerable gap for newly-qualified accountants with up to one year post-qualified experience.
What are employers looking for?
The hottest candidates are newly-qualified with banking engagement experience, so those with 6-8 months post-audit experience with another employer are highly sought-after. Ex-‘Big Four’ candidates are also attractive for investment banks. CVs should explain what current roles entail on a day-to-day basis, with particular reference to technical accounting experience. Soft skills at interviews have become very important – individuals that are communicative, well-presented and can demonstrate drive and ambition are at an advantage.
Advice for accountants pursuing an investment banking career in London?
Candidates should ensure that their CV lists the different clients they have worked with in detail. If you have had the opportunity to upgrade your Excel skills to advanced (macros/VBA), this will help too.
